The ESU-NYDL Summer Institute is a week-long debate program where students develop their public speaking, argumentation, and critical thinking skills through a focused exploration of debate. Students are placed into labs based on experience level, ensuring age-appropriate instruction and challenge.
New this year: students can enroll for multiple weeks! With expanded sessions, campers who want a deeper experience are welcome to join us for more than one week.
A $200 deposit and completed form will be required to secure your student's spot in the program. If your student is admitted, your deposit will be non-refundable.
Fundamentals Labs are designed for rising 5th–7th graders who are new to debate. These students will learn the basics of cross-examination, rebuttals, research, and using evidence. Through engaging drills and guided practice, students will build foundational skills as they prepare for a final-day tournament on the week’s selected topic.
Accelerated Labs are geared toward rising 7th–9th graders with prior debate experience. These students will work on a faster-paced timeline to deepen their strategic understanding, enhance case writing, and sharpen their refutation and rebuttal skills in preparation for a competitive tournament at the end of the week.
No matter the level, all students will participate in a culminating debate tournament, showcasing the progress they’ve made throughout the week.
New this year: an added cultural component, including visits to nearby embassies, the United Nations, and lunchtime talks with diplomats- connecting debate skills to real-world global institutions.
